Goal-oriented Octavia Snow is a 33-year old, single woman who desires to experience the life she believes she deserves. She is determined to establish a successful career as a news reporter, get married, then have children – in that order. Her tenacious attitude, consequently, causes her to lose some of the most important people and things in her life. After being diagnosed with stage-2 breast cancer and then losing her job, Octavia comes face-to-face with herself. By the end of her story, Octavia is left with the decision of allowing life’s circumstances to take her on an unexpected path, or to continue to be disappointed when things don’t go her way.
He Made Me Laugh will make its readers laugh, cry, and experience hope, while raising their level of awareness of their own inner and outer-being. This novella had some high points and some low points. I’ll go ahead and get the lows out of the way first.
Throughout the book the main character whose name is Octavia is referred to as Olivia. I don’t know if this was a mistake of the author or it’s supposed to be short for Octavia. It was disorienting and took me completely out of the story. I literally paged through the book looking for where I may of missed why Octavia would randomly be called Olivia. I couldn’t figure it out and it ate at me every time I read it.
The story felt rushed. When you have a story whose subject is as emotional as cancer you would expect to walk the journey with the character. There isn’t much of that. It felt very glossed over.
The high points are that Octavia is a very interesting character. Her emotions and reactions are unique. Her journey is unique. All of the supporting characters are interesting as well. If more time and writing was put into this novella it could make a really great book. The author has a good story here. It just needs to be fleshed out a lot more.
As it stands I am granting this book 3 stars.
